Story  Review & Film Summary: 

A museum chaperone named Mary Beth takes a group of troubled children on a tour and tells them about the famous legends and myths of Mexican folklore. She proceeds to tell them the story of the Mexican town of San Angel from the Book of Life, which holds every story in the world.

The spirits La Muerte, ruler of the Land of the Remembered and Xibalba, ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, appear at San Angel's Day of the Dead festival where they set up a wager after seeing two boys, Manolo and Joaquín, competing over a free-spirited girl named María. La Muerte bets that Manolo will marry María, while Xibalba bets on Joaquín. If La Muerte wins, Xibalba can no longer interfere in mortal affairs, but if Xibalba wins, he and La Muerte will switch domains. However, Xibalba cheats by giving Joaquin his Medal of Eternal Life, which renders the wearer invulnerable. Later, María sets free a herd of animals due to be slaughtered, much to the chagrin of her father General Posada, who sends Maria away to a private boarding school in Spain to learn to behave. While seeing her off, Manolo gives her a baby pig, Chuy, while she gives him a new guitar which has "Always play from the heart engraved on it.

Years pass as Manolo is trained by his father Carlos to become a skilled bullfighter while Joaquín becomes the town hero with the help of the Medal of Eternal Life. On the day that María returns, a celebration is held in town culminating in Manolo's first bullfight. During the fight, Manolo refuses to kill the bull, disappointing his father and the crowd but delighting María. That night, María learns her father is arranging her marriage to Joaquín so that the hero would stay and protect San Angel from the bandit Chakal (who previously owned the Medal himself), but she is conflicted by her feelings for Manolo. María and Manolo secretly meet and profess their love for each other, but they are interrupted when a snake, sent by Xibalba, bites María and seemingly kills her. Despondent, Manolo is tricked by Xibalba who offers him a way to see Maria again, as he summons the snake to inflict a double bite which kills Manolo.

Manolo travels to the Land of the Remembered where he reunites with his mother, Carmen and his illustrious deceased family members. They travel to La Muerte's castle, but find it now occupied by Xibalba who explains the bet and that the snake only gave María enough venom to put her into a coma, but it gave Manolo enough to kill him. Once María awoke, she learned of Manolo's death and decides to accept Joaquín's proposal for the sake of the town. Manolo, Carmen and Manolo's grandfather, Luis travel to the Cave of Souls in order to reach the Land of the Forgotten. After accomplishing a pair of dangerous tasks, Manolo's pure heart allows him and his family to enter the Cave, where they meet the Candle Maker, who oversees the lives of everybody in the living world. After seeing that Manolo's story in the Book of Life is empty (due to Xibalba's meddling) and can be rewritten by Manolo's own actions, the Candle Maker takes the group to the Land of the Forgotten. There, Manolo finds La Muerte and exposes Xibalba's cheating. Xibalba appears and agrees to give Manolo life again if he can face his greatest fear, which Xibalba has manifest as every single bull his family ever fought. La Muerte convinces Xibalba to offer the wager by offering him both kingdoms should Manolo lose. Manolo defeats the bull not by killing it, but by apologizing to all bulls in song.

In the living world, Chakal learns that Joaquín has the Medal of Eternal Life and leads his army of bandits to San Angel on the day of the wedding. The bandit kills Carlos, who joins his family as they watch Manolo's challenge. Manolo apologizes to the grudge-filled spirit to forgive his family's transgressions and it dissolves peacefully away. Impressed, the deities grant Manolo his life back and send him and his family's spirits to the living world to defeat Chakal. After saving the town, Joaquín returns the medal to Xibalba, while Manolo and María wed happily as Xibalba and La Muerte reconcile.

At the end, as the now-enlightened children leave the museum, Mary Beth and a security guard introduced earlier reveal themselves as La Muerte and Xibalba, and the Candle Maker reminds everyone to write their Won Stories.

Dr. Shaina Mehra (Jaqueline Fernandez) is a psychiatrist living in Poland. One day, her father, Mr. Brijesh Mehra (Saurabh Shukla) brings a marriage proposal and asks her to meet Himanshu Tyagi (Randeep Hooda). Himanshu and Shaina meet in a train, where Shaina reveals that she had an ex-boyfriend, Devi, (Salman Khan) and talks about her experiences with him.

Devi Lal Singh is a highly intelligent, highly achieved but adventurous, most typical and fun-loving youth, who is always looking for a 'kick' or adventure or something fun in life. Due to his daredevil attitude, he never stays in one job for long. He has resigned from 32 companies as he feels that he is suffering from a lack of kick. When Shaina first meets Devi, she is trying to help her friend Vidhi (Sumona Chakravarti) elope with her lover who turns out to be Devi's friend (Kavin Dave). Devi rescues them both, gets them married in a temple but also helps her mother follow them and reach the temple for the 'kick'. Shaina initially dislikes Devi because of his thrill seeking and daredevil attitude. Shaina calls up Inspector Ramavtaar Rathi (Sanjay Mishra) to arrest him for an eve teasing case but he sees Devi beating goons. Devi asks the inspector to take him to jail. Shaina starts to like Devi after learning that he is a good person after seeing a video of him beating the goons. Shaina goes to free him. Later Shaina meets Devi's caring but easy going parents including his father Lal Singh (Mithun Chakraborty) and his mother (Archana Puran Singh). She tells Shaina about Devi. Devi and Shaina start dating, and fall in love with each other. They decide to get married. On Shaina's suggestion, Devi accepts a job in a chemical lab, but resigns in a few days after once again suffering from the lack of kick. Upon hearing this, Shaina scolds him. Upset, Devi breaks up with her and moves away after telling her that he is going to get another job in which he won't suffer from a lack of kick. Shaina leaves for Poland, where her parents live, and does not hear about or see Devi for a year.

Himanshu, who is a police inspector, shares his experiences with a thief he deeply hates, because he can't stop him. Himanshu had come to Poland to catch a thief. The robber, called 'Devil', targets all the rich people associated with Shiv Gajra (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a corrupt businessman, and robs them. The robber is none other than Devi. When Himanshu is unsuccessful in catching Devil, Devi contacts Himanshu and refers to him as a "partner" and insults him by calling him a loser. The word "loser" was in fact a hint towards the number for the flight Devi took to Warsaw to commit his next robbery, LO737. Himanshu ends up going to Poland to catch him, and that was how he ended up there.

Shaina spots Devi in Poland. He has come there for treatment after losing his memory in an accident. Shaina, who is a psychiatrist, offers to handle Devi's case and decides to take him home. It is now revealed that Devi is just acting about his memory loss and his real plan is to befriend and fool Himanshu and rob Shiv, who will be coming to Poland for a deal worth crores of rupees. Devi enters a charity function and robs Shiv, who was about to invest a huge amount of money in a foreign firm. During the robbery Himanshu and Shaina discover Devil's true identity. Devi escapes by jumping from off the building and rappelling down. He steals a bus and tries to escape. He is then chased by cops led by Himanshu. After a long chase, though many cops die and Devi gets cornered by Himanshu who is with a few cops blocking him, he escapes by driving off the bridge. Unfortunately the bus falls into the river, and the cash is destroyed in the process. Devi celebrates his failure back in India. Himanshu spots Devi and warns him that if he tries to rob again he will be killed, but Devi challenges him by saying that he will rob a huge party fund worth 5 billion rupees on November 14th. Devi dares Himanshu to kill him on the 14th, otherwise Devi will be standing in front of him on November 15th, and he won't be able to do anything.

In a flashback, Devi's true intentions and good deeds are revealed by Devi's father. He tells Shaina that his son is committing robberies to help poor children who are suffering from diseases and need millions of rupees for treatment. Devi once saved a girl named Jhumki by arranging 2 million rupees through some means after getting a letter sent by her dead parents who had committed suicide. When a doctor tells him that several such children are suffering from diseases, he decides to save them by performing robberies in order to get the money for their treatment, knowing that this will give him a lot of kick. On the 14th of November, Devi goes to steal the party funds. He goes to find Shiv, and his guards are waiting for him. After fighting Shiv's henchmen, Devi confronts and kills Shiv. He puts a briefcase full of the money in the back of a van in a parking lot. He tells his father to get in and drive away with the money. He then runs out of the parking lot towards the street to draw the police force's attention away from his father. Himanshu is set up with many officers to shoot Devi, but many kids block his way as soon as he has a clear shot. It turns out that the 14th of November is Children's Day, and the sick children are going to pray for Devi and thank him for saving them. Himanshu realizes that all the robberies Devi did was actually for the kids.

On the 15th of November, Devi joins the police force to "catch" Devil. He arrives at the police station and stands in front of an astonished and speechless Himanshu, who is unable to do anything about the situation, therefore completing his challenge successfully. Himanshu is taken off the case and it is given to Devi, who is now a police officer. Devi then thanks Himanshu, saying that he was never against him, but he is against the police force. Himanshu then says that it is impossible to understand him. The film ends with Devi saying, "Don't think too much about me, I can only be loved, not understood, and that's the best kick in life." He gets back together with Shaina in the end with the song Yaar Na Miley with Nargis Fakhri.

On another occasion, a police inspector arrests Jay and hands him over to a group of gangsters led by Pedro. Jay kills them all and is revealed to be a professional assassin and previous right-hand man of underworld criminal Xavier, nicknamed AJ. After AJ single-handedly rescued Xavier's sister Marina from a bunch of kidnappers, Marina falls for Jay but he rejects her as he is married to Anusha (Yami Gautam).

Angered, Xavier tries to kill Anusha twice, which leaves her brutally injured. Jay then escaped to India and is in the process of getting her treated. When Vishi spots Jay, he reveals his identity and story to Vishi. Jay then requests Vishi to go to Bangkok disguised as AJ to fool Xavier and his sister; meanwhile AJ makes time to get his wife operated on, as she is expecting a baby. Vishi agrees to help and goes to Bangkok along with his friend MoosKunaal Roy Kapur.

In 1988, following his mother's death, a young Peter Quill is abducted from Earth by the Ravagers, a group of space pirates led by Yondu Udonta. Twenty-six years later on the planet Morag, Quill steals an orb, after which he is intercepted by Korath, a subordinate to the fanatical Kree, Ronan. Although Quill escapes with the orb, Yondu discovers his theft and issues a bounty for his capture, while Ronan sends the assassin Gamora after the orb.

When Quill attempts to sell the orb on the Nova Empire capital world, Xandar, Gamora ambushes him and steals it. A fight ensues, drawing in a pair of bounty hunters: the genetically engineered raccoon Rocket, and the tree-like humanoid Groot. The Nova Corps arrives and arrests all four, imprisoning them in the Kyln. While there, a powerful inmate, Drax, attempts to kill Gamora due to her association with Ronan, who killed his family. Quill convinces Drax that Gamora can bring Ronan to him. Gamora reveals that she has betrayed Ronan, unwilling to let him use the orb's power to destroy planets, starting with Xandar. Learning that Gamora has a buyer for the orb, she, Quill, Rocket, Groot, and Drax work together to escape from the Kyln.

Elsewhere, Ronan meets with Gamora's adoptive father, Thanos, to discuss her betrayal. Accompanied by Drax, Quill's group escapes the Kyln in his ship – the Milano – and flee to Knowhere, a remote criminal outpost in space built in the giant severed-head of a Celestial. A drunken Drax summons Ronan while the rest of the group meet Gamora's contact, the collector Taneleer Tivan. Tivan opens the orb, revealing an Infinity Stone, an item of immeasurable power that destroys all but the most powerful beings who wield it. Suddenly, Tivan's tormented assistant grabs the Stone, triggering an explosion that engulfs Tivan's archive.

Ronan arrives and easily defeats Drax, while the others flee by ship, pursued by Ronan's followers and Gamora's sister Nebula. Nebula destroys Gamora's ship, leaving her floating in space, and Ronan's forces capture the orb. Quill contacts Yondu before following Gamora into space, giving her his helmet to survive; Yondu arrives and retrieves the pair. Rocket, Drax, and Groot threaten to attack Yondu's ship to rescue them, but Quill negotiates a truce by convincing Yondu that they can recover the orb. Quill's group agrees that facing Ronan means certain death, but that they cannot let him use the Infinity Stone to destroy the galaxy. On Ronan's flagship, the Dark Aster, Ronan embeds the Stone in his warhammer, taking its power for himself. He contacts Thanos, threatening to kill him after the destruction of Xandar; hateful of her adopted father, Nebula allies with Ronan.

Near Xandar, the Dark Aster is confronted by the Ravagers, the Nova Corps, and Quill's group, which breaches the Dark Aster. Ronan uses his empowered warhammer to destroy the Nova Corps fleet. On the Dark Aster, after Gamora defeats Nebula (who escapes), she unlocks Ronan's chambers, but the group finds themselves outmatched by his power until Rocket crashes the Milano through the Dark Aster and into Ronan. The damaged Dark Aster crash-lands on Xandar, with Groot sacrificing himself to shield the group. Ronan emerges from the wreck and prepares to destroy Xandar, but Quill distracts him, allowing Drax and Rocket to destroy Ronan's warhammer. Quill grabs the freed Stone, and with Gamora, Drax, and Rocket sharing its burden, they use it to destroy Ronan.

In the aftermath, Quill tricks Yondu into taking a container supposedly containing the Stone, then gives the real Stone to the Nova Corps. As the Ravagers leave Xandar, Yondu remarks that it turned out well that they did not deliver Quill to his father per their contract. Quill's group, now known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, have their criminal records expunged, and Quill learns that he is only half-human, his father being part of an ancient, unknown species. Quill finally opens the last present he received from his mother: a cassette tape filled with her favorite songs. The Guardians leave in the rebuilt Milano along with a sapling cut from Groot.

In a post-credits scene, Tivan sits in his destroyed archive with two of his living exhibits: a canine cosmonaut and an anthropomorphic duck.

Sentinels, robots that were created for the purpose of hunting down mutants were released in 1973. 50 years later the Sentinels would also hunt humans who aid mutants. Charles Xavier and his X-Men try their best to deal with the Sentinels but they are able to adapt and deal with all mutant abilities. Charles decides to go back in time and change things. He asks Kitty Pryde who can send a person's consciousness into the person's past to send him but she can only send someone back a few weeks because if she sends someone back further it could harm them. So Logan decides to go back himself because he might be able to withstand it. So Charles tells him that it's Mystique who's responsible because when she learned about the Sentinels she sought out Bolivar Trask the man who created them and killed him. She would be caught and studied and her ability to change was somehow added to the Sentinels which is why they can adapt. Logan must go to the younger Charles and ask him to help; problem is...

In the future, robots known as Sentinels are exterminating mutants and their human allies. A band of mutants evades the Sentinels with the help of Kitty Pryde, who has the ability to project a person's consciousness into the past. Pryde's group convenes with Storm, Logan, Professor Charles Xavier, and Erik Lensherr at a monastery in China. Kitty sends Logan's consciousness 50 years back in time to 1973 to prevent Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels. Following the assassination, Mystique was captured, and her DNA was used by Trask's company to improve the Sentinels, whose ability to adapt to any mutant power makes them almost invincible. Charles and Erik advise Logan to find both of their younger selves for help.

At the X-Mansion in 1973, Logan encounters Charles and Hank McCoy. Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters has closed after most of the teachers and students were drafted for the Vietnam War. Charles, a broken man, has been overusing a serum that allows him to walk but suppresses his telepathy. Logan explains his mission and persuades Charles to help free Erik from a prison cell beneath the Pentagon, where he is being held for allegedly assassinating President John F. Kennedy. They rescue Erik with the help of Peter Maximoff, a mutant with superhuman speed.

In Washington D.C., Trask unsuccessfully lobbies Congress to gain support for his Sentinel program. Meanwhile, in Saigon, Mystique prevents William Stryker from appropriating a group of mutant G.I.s for Trask's research. Mystique investigates Trask's office and discovers he has been capturing mutants to use in experiments. Charles, Erik, Hank, and Logan fly to Paris to intercept Mystique, who is impersonating a North Vietnamese general to infiltrate the Paris Peace Accords. There, Trask attempts to sell his Sentinel technology to Communist nations. Charles' group arrives as Mystique is about to kill Trask. Erik tries to kill Mystique to ensure her DNA cannot be used for the Sentinels, but she jumps from a window. The fight spills onto the street in view of the public, allowing Erik and Mystique to escape.

Trask is saved, but the world is horrified by the existence of mutants. President Richard Nixon approves Trask's Sentinel program and arranges an unveiling ceremony. Trask's scientists recover Mystique's blood from the street. Meanwhile, Erik—who has recovered his telepathy-blocking helmet—intercepts the prototype Sentinels in transit and laces their polymer-based frames with steel, allowing him to control them. At the mansion, Charles stops taking his serum and slowly regains his mental powers, while losing the ability to walk. Through Logan, Charles speaks to his future self and is inspired to work for peace between humans and mutants once again. He uses Cerebro to track Mystique, who is heading to Washington D.C.

As Charles, Logan, and Hank search for Mystique, Nixon unveils the Sentinel prototypes at the White House. Erik commandeers the Sentinels and attacks the crowd, then sets the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium around the White House as a barricade. Nixon and Trask, accompanied by the Cabinet, Secret Service officers, and Mystique (disguised as a Secret Service member), are taken to a safe room. Logan and Hank try to stop Erik, but he pits a Sentinel against them and then throws Logan into the Potomac River. In the future, the X-Men make their final stand as a large army of Sentinels attack the monastery. In 1973, Erik pulls the safe room from the White House and prepares to kill Nixon and his Cabinet. Mystique, disguised as Nixon, incapacitates Erik with a plastic gun. Charles persuades Mystique to spare Trask and allows her and Erik to flee. Mystique's actions are seen as a mutant saving the President, leading to the cancellation of the Sentinel program. Trask is arrested for trying to sell American military secrets.

Logan wakes up in the future to find Bobby Drake, Rogue, Peter Rasputin, Kitty, Hank, Storm, Jean Grey, Scott Summers, and Charles alive. In 1973, Mystique impersonates Stryker and takes custody of Logan.

In the year 1990 Iqbal Haroon Khan (Jackie Shroff) runs the The Great Indian Circus in Chicago, which has fallen on bad times. Anderson's (Andrew Bicknell) bank – Western Bank of Chicago – which has lent money to Iqbal Khan, decides to close down the circus when Khan is unable to repay the loan. Young Sahir (Siddharth Nigam), the little son of Iqbal Khan, pleads with Anderson not to shut down his father's circus, as he and his father would soon be able to turn the corner. But Iqbal Khan's presentation before the bankers and Sahir's pleas don't help. Iqbal Khan commits suicide in front of the heartless Anderson, leaving Sahir devastated.

Now in 2013, Sahir (Aamir Khan) has still not forgotten the high-handedness of the bank and swears revenge. He robs various branches of Western Bank of Chicago, leaving behind a message in Hindi and a clown mask. During the chase, he runs from top to the bottom of the Western Bank of Chicago building. As the police comes to the scene, he runs into a van as the they begin to surround the vehicle. Sahir jumps out in a BMW K1300R after a little explosion. On the chase, he slides under a truck and pops out to continue. He further kicks a police officer off his patrol motorcycle causing the officer to lose control and crash into a newspaper stand. While beyond that, Sahir continually tries to escape his pursuers and goes into a public parking garage. Then out of nowhere, he uses a steel cable cord like an attachment and rides his bike on it and is nearly knocked down by a train. despite all efforts of law enforcement, the robbery isn't foiled and he successfully gets away.

As Chicago Police Officer Victoria (Tabrett Bethell) fails to catch him, she calls ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) and his partner, Ali (Uday Chopra), for help in solving the case. Jai baits Sahir into robbing again by making it known he's on the case and that he believes the thief to be an amateur thereby goading him on. Gathering information from a news channel regarding the plan, Sahir poses as an informant for Jai, and manages to gather information on the bank while giving Jai a lead to follow. Eventually, Sahir robs the bank and escapes, but Jai and Ali follow him. During the pursuit, Sahir nearly knocks Ali and stops on Warbash Avenue as the bridge rises, he drives straight and jumps off. His bike transforms into a jet ski. While on a water pursuit, Jai manages to take a boat and chases Sahir. After almost knocking off Ali, Sahir is almost about to reach the next bridge but the police arrive. Sahir dives underwater, then jumps out from the water ejecting his jet ski. Jai, while hanging on a helicopter ladder, manages to shoot Sahir on the left shoulder before he disappears again.

Sahir has a big premiere of a revamped version of The Great Indian Circus, with his female lead acrobat, Aaliya (Katrina Kaif), involving a trick with him disappearing in one place and showing up in another. The show is a success, but afterwards, Jai, Ali, and the police surround him, knowing he's the thief. Jai says the proof will be the gunshot wound, but when Sahir is examined, there is no evidence of a gunshot wound anywhere on his body. Jai and Ali leave while Sahir retires to his dressing room. It is then revealed that Sahir has an autistic twin brother, Samar, who helps him pull off his trick and helps him in planning and pulling of the robberies (like the rope string stunt and ejecting the jet-ski bike) and it was Samar who sustained the gun-shot wound.

Jai is fired from the case, but is encouraged by Ali to prove Sahir's guilt by going rogue. Jai eventually finds out about Samar, and sets about finding a way to corner Sahir. Samar, being mentally challenged, is kept in seclusion by Sahir. However, he allows Samar outdoors once a week, and Jai manages to befriend him during this time in order to perform his plan. Samar has fallen in love with Aaliya after performing with her in the circus, but cannot express it. This leads to a rift between the brothers. Jai tries to take advantage of this, but Sahir finds out and thwarts Jai's plan to stop them. He decides the only way to catch the brothers is in the act of robbing. Sahir and Samar pull off their final bank heist, and escape. However, the following day, Jai manages to corner them as they're making their way out of town. They robs on 22 May. Samar is hesitant to run when Aaliya shows up, begging him to stop. Sahir surrenders to Jai, asking him to spare Samar. Jai agrees, but right after, Sahir attempts to jump off the dam. Samar grabs Sahir's hand, refusing to let him go. Sahir begs Samar to let go, saying he can live freely with Aaliya. But Samar says that both of them are born together and should die together. Eventually, the two of them jump off the dam together and fall to their death. Western Bank of Chicago is seen to shut down as a result of the heists, while Aaliya is shown having taken over The Great Indian Circus and still performing for it

By far one of the greatest Batman animated features to date! Damien has to be one of the greatest characters in Batman's recent history (surprisingly, created by one of the most God awful hacks the DC universe has seen) and his story shines like the summer sun in this gripping tale of a child coming to terms. The only thing that could have made this story better is if it were longer. With a running time of seventy four minutes, there wasn't enough room for a much-needed development, but the story, while rushed, was still well put together.

The best parts are when Bruce Wayne is introduced to his son, and Damien is introduced to a lifestyle that he is not familiar with. What else could they add to make this story more gripping, you ask? Death Stroke, Slade Wilson just happens to be the villain! While his role is dreadfully one-sided, and not all that interesting, he still plays a great foil to the fighting styles he is subjected to.

The imagery is bloody, grimy and pulls no punches when it comes to action scenes. This movie is not really for kids of all ages, but if you are a true-blue Batman fanatic, it will please all of your senses.

Rahul Mithaiwala (Shahrukh Khan) is a forty-year-old bachelor living in Mumbai. His parents died in a car accident when he was eight years old, so his grandparents raised him. His grandfather (Lekh Tandon) owns a chain of confectionery shops. Before his grandfather's 100th birthday celebration, two of Rahul's friends invite him to accompany them on a vacation in Goa, which he accepts. Rahul's grandfather dies on the eve of the celebration. His grandmother tells Rahul that his grandfather wanted his ashes to be divided into two parts—one of each to be immersed in the Ganges and Rameswaram. She asks Rahul to take the ashes to Rameswaram and disperse them. Reluctantly, he accepts her request but is also eager to attend the Goa trip. Rahul and his friends plan to dump the ashes at Goa but his grandmother wants to see him off, forcing Rahul to travel by train. He books a single ticket on the Chennai Express, planning to meet his friends along the way. However, Rahul forgets to take the ashes, and he almost misses the train when he returns to collect them. As he tries to leave the train, he notices a young woman running to board it. He helps her and four other people board the moving train, but the train leaves the station before he can get off.

Rahul tries to flirt with the woman, who starts communicating by singing parodies of Hindi film songs, and explains that the four men are trying to kidnap her. Rahul lends her his mobile phone so that she can contact her friends, but the men with her grab it and throw it from the train. Rahul is annoyed, but says nothing because the men are carrying weapons. Rahul tells the ticket inspector about them, but they push the inspector into a river below a bridge. Panicked, Rahul learns that the men are her cousins, and that her name is Meenalochni "Meena" Azhagusundaram (Deepika Padukone). She is fleeing from a forced marriage to Tangaballi (Nikitin Dheer). Her father, Durgeshwara Azhagusundaram (Sathyaraj) is a powerful headman of the local mafia in Tamil Nadu.

Alossvn'is family is migrating west. When they try to cr the Hatrack River, an unknown force tries to stop the as-yet-unborn Alvin being born - since Alvin would be the seventh son of a seventh son, therefore possessing incredible powers as a Maker. The force sends a tree down the river to crush the wagon the pregnant Mrs. Miller is riding in. Her eldest son Vigor diverts the tree, but is mortally wounded in the act. Because a seventh son must be born while the other six are alive, Vigor desperately clings to life until Alvin is born. Help is dispatched at the insistence of five-year-old "torch" (a person who, among other things, can see the life forces of people and under certain conditions, their myriad alternate futures) Peggy Guester, who sees Alvin and Alvin's possible future as a Maker.

As the years pass, Alvin avoids numerous attempts of an unknown force trying to kill him, often helped by the intervention of a mysterious protector. Alvin's father, a non-believer in God, believes that a water spirit is trying to kill Alvin. When Alvin is seven, a new Reverend, named Thrower, arrives in town, trying to build a church. Alvin's father refuses to help, but Mrs. Miller has all of her sons work on building the church. When the ridgebeam is being place onto the church in construction, it shivers and breaks, seemingly about to fall on Alvin. However, mid-air, it breaks in two, and misses Alvin - yet another example of Alvin's close-to-death experiences. When Alvin goes home, he provokes one of his sisters by poking her, so they get revenge on Alvin by putting needles into his night gown. Alvin avenges himself by using his knack to send cockroaches after his sisters. The plan works, Alvin winning a victory over his sisters. However, afterwards, he has a vision he dubs Shining Man, who makes him promise only to use his knack for good.

When Alvin is ten, "Taleswapper" (William Blake) a traveling storyteller arrives in the town Alvin's parents have founded. After stopping by Alvin's brother-in-law's house (who directs Taleswapper to the Miller house), he visits the church, where he notices that the altar has been touched upon by an evil entity. Reverend Thrower kicks him out, and Taleswapper goes to the Miller's, where his timely intervention stops Mr. Miller from killing Alvin. Taleswapper is welcomed in. Taleswapper helps to put a name to the unknown force that tries to stop Alvin from realizing his true powers as a Maker: the Unmaker. Meanwhile, the Reverend Philadelphia Thrower becomes a tool of the Unmaker - who was the evil force that touched the altar.

Soon the Miller family goes to a quarry to cut out a millstone. Here Alvin's knack is revealed - single-handedly he cut the millstone through hard rock. During the night, Taleswapper and Mr. Miller guard the millstone. Mr. Miller tells Taleswapper a story about how a force is trying to use him to kill Alvin - revealing the reason why Mr. Miller was about to kill Alvin when Taleswapper first arrived. Taleswapper advises Mr. Miller to send Alvin away to someplace where he may be safe. The next day the millstone is taken home. The Unmaker finally manages to injure Alvin, by making a millstone fall on him. Taleswapper encourages him to heal himself. Alvin does so, but finds that a part of his bone he cannot heal alone, and Alvin falls into a time of bad health. He realizes that he might need outside help to heal himself. Reverend Thrower (acting as a surgeon) attempts to kill him, but finds himself unable to by a mysterious force. Alvin heals himself (with the aid of his brother Measure, who performs the surgery). Alvin contracted as an apprentice to a blacksmith in the town on the Hatrack River where he was born.

Taleswapper meets up with Peggy. It is revealed that she, using her torch powers and Alvin's birth caul, had protected Alvin all his years, and the Unmaker was only able to hurt Alvin with the millstone because Alvin himself overrode her powers that tried to save him.
